GRAVES DISEASE: THE UNFORGOTTEN ONE

Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s get all the attention, but so many people are suffering from Graves. So hopefully we can bring some clarity to this disease for all those that are suffering.

Graves disease is another auto-immune condition that leads to an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). Basically, it’s like a car that is speeding out of control, but the driver continues to step on the accelorator.

Graves disease is responsible for up to 85% of all cases of hyperthyroidism. In this condition, the immune system produces an antibody called thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI), also referred to as TR-Ab or TSHR. On a lab one will observe elevated TSI, FT4, FT3 and low TSH.

TSI mimics the action of TSH causing the excess secretion of FT4 and FT3.

Remember TSH is a pituitary hormone, so you are seeing more what your pituitary is up to than your thyroid. With Graves TSH is often very low because TSI mimics TSH, letting the body know that there is enough TSH when in reality there is not.

Typically temps are above 98.6 and stable early on, but these drop and become unstable the more chronic it becomes. This is due to weakened adrenals and the prolonged high FT4.

What are some of the steps you can take to reverse Graves?

1️⃣ Regulate your blood sugar: This will improve digestion, increase immunity and take the burden off your adrenal glands. 

2️⃣ Improve digestion by eating digestible metabolic foods

3️⃣ Daily movement is important to use up excess thyroid hormone.

4️⃣ Apply alternating hot and cold compress on thyroid area: Hot for 3min:Cold for 1min. Perform 2x a day for 7 days, then 1x a day for 30days.

5️⃣ Avoid use of iodine supplementation, iodine rich foods as well as iodized salt.

6️⃣ Avoid certain foods that contain thyroid promoting amines: sauerkraut, wine (histamine), cheese (tyramine), bananas (dopamine).

7️⃣ Eat at least ONE RAW serving daily of foods that contain PUFAs and Goitrogens, which will help initially to slow down thyroid hormone conversion.
